Die USF Division of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Pediatric Epidemiology Center (PEc) wurde 2005 mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der Verbesserung der Kindergesundheit durch Forschung gegründet. Die Mission des Zentrums ist die Durchführung qualitativ hochwertiger epidemiologischer Forschung, die zu verbesserten Präventionsstrategien, Behandlungen und Ergebnissen für Kinder führt.

Ein Bereich, in dem PEc bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat, ist die Erforschung von Autismus-Spektrum-Störungen (ASD). Das Zentrum war an mehreren groß angelegten Studien beteiligt, die darauf abzielten, Risikofaktoren für ASD zu identifizieren und wirksame Interventionen für betroffene Kinder zu entwickeln. Eine von PEc durchgeführte Studie ergab beispielsweise, dass die Exposition der Mutter gegenüber Luftverschmutzung während der Schwangerschaft das Risiko für ASD bei den Nachkommen erhöhen kann.
Ein weiterer Bereich, in dem PEc bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat, ist die Erforschung von Fettleibigkeit bei Kindern. Das Zentrum war an mehreren Studien beteiligt, die darauf abzielten, Risikofaktoren für Fettleibigkeit bei Kindern zu identifizieren und wirksame Interventionen für betroffene Kinder zu entwickeln. Eine von PEc durchgeführte Studie ergab beispielsweise, dass die Exposition gegenüber Antibiotika im frühen Leben das Risiko für Fettleibigkeit bei Kindern erhöhen kann.
Neben der Durchführung eigener Forschungsprojekte arbeitet PEc auch mit anderen Institutionen an verschiedenen pädiatrischen Epidemiologieprojekten wie multizentrischen klinischen Studien oder Beobachtungsstudien zusammen, die durch NIH- oder CDC-Zuschüsse finanziert werden.
PEc bietet auch Ausbildungsmöglichkeiten für Studenten, die an Karrieren im Zusammenhang mit pädiatrischer Epidemiologie oder Biostatistik/Bioinformatik interessiert sind, durch Praktika oder Stipendienprogramme, die von USF Health Colleges oder externen Finanzierungsquellen wie NIH T32-Ausbildungsstipendien angeboten werden.
