NAMENGESCHICHTEN - Als das Unternehmen 1924 geboren wurde, wurde es als French Oil Company bezeichnet. Der Name Total erscheint 1953, aber erst 1991 wird das PSC vollständig verschwinden.
Ein solcher Name hat den Vorteil der Einfachheit. Es ist auf der ganzen Welt oder fast verständlich. Es kann auch den Vorteil haben, daran zu erinnern, dass die Gruppe in allen Phasen präsent ist: von der Ölsuche bis zum Verkauf von Benzin durch Gewinnung, Raffination und Transport. Dieser Name ist aber auch das Ergebnis einer langen Entwicklung. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte hat sich das Unternehmen fünf Mal verändert. Anfangs gab es die französische Ölgesellschaft, die unter dem Akronym CFP zusammengefasst wurde. Das Unternehmen wurde 1924 auf Initiative des Staates gegründet und trat 1929 an die Börse. Frankreich brauchte dann eine Ölgesellschaft, die Anteilseigner der brandneuen Iraq Petroleum Company wurde und nach dem Fall des irakischen Schwarzgoldes an der Ausbeutung teilnahm Osmanisches Reich.
Dieser Name träumt nicht? Was auch immer. Bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg beschränkte sich seine Tätigkeit auf die Gewinnung von Öl. Szenenwechsel 1947 mit dem Aufbau eines Netzes von Tankstellen und Implantationen im Ausland in Europa, aber auch in Afrika und Australien.
Das Akronym CFP wird nicht als sehr geeignet angesehen, um Verbraucher zu erobern. 1953 beschlossen die Verantwortlichen, eine einfachere Marke, Total, zu kreieren, die 1954 zusammen mit einem blau-weiß-roten Logo erschien. Es überwacht alle Aktivitäten, die sich an die breite Öffentlichkeit richten (Tankstellen, Öl ...). Sehr bald ist der Erfolg am Rendezvous. Die Marke Total gewinnt weltweite Sichtbarkeit.
