Vor zwei Jahren wurde auf dem Weg zum Ersatz von Katarakten bei beiden Augen eine schwere Fuchs-Hornhautdystrophie diagnostiziert. Unbehandelt würde dies letztendlich zu völliger Blindheit führen. Die typischen chirurgischen Alternativen umfassen entweder den Ersatz der Hornhaut oder in jüngerer Zeit das Einbringen einer Schicht Epithelgewebe.
Glücklicherweise wurde ich an einen unglaublich talentierten Hornhautchirurgen, Dr. Robert Weisenthal, in Dewitt, NY, verwiesen. Nach einer gründlichen Untersuchung bot er mir ein neues, kürzlich verfügbares chirurgisches Verfahren namens Descemet Stripping Only (kurz DSO) an. Dieses DSO würde unmittelbar vor dem Entfernen des Katarakts und dem Einsetzen der neuen Linse durchgeführt. Der gesamte Prozess würde nur 30 Minuten dauern, aber die Wiederherstellung des vollen Sehvermögens wäre wahrscheinlich ein langsamer Prozess, der 2 bis 3 Monate dauern würde.
Dr. Weisenthal sagte, dass die beste Vision, die ich mit DSO erreichen könnte, nur 20/45 sein könnte. Die klassische Alternative würde mich jedoch für den Rest meines Lebens Steroidtropfen benötigen lassen und das Risiko bergen, dass die Transplantation abgelehnt werden könnte. Es war also eine ziemlich einfache Entscheidung, dieses neue DSO-Verfahren zu wählen.
Ich hatte mein linkes Auge im September 2019 und dann mein rechtes Auge im Juli 2020 gemacht. Ich machte am 29. September 2020 eine routinemäßige Fortschrittskontrolle und war sehr erfreut zu erfahren, dass mein linkes Auge jetzt 20/25 ist und mein rechtes Auge ist 20/30.
Während ich dies schreibe, brauche ich immer noch eine Brille zum Lesen, um leichten Astigmatismus zu korrigieren. Ohne Brille kann ich aus dem Fenster schauen und so gut sehen, wie ich es noch nie erlebt habe. Ich kann ohne Brille fahren! Zu sagen, dass ich froh bin, diese Chance genutzt zu haben, wäre eine große Untertreibung. Ich bin sehr glücklich und dankbar, dass ich an Dr. Weisenthal überwiesen wurde.
