Die zwischen 1869 und 1872 erbaute Melbourne Mint wurde am 12. Juni 1872 als Zweig der Royal Mint in London eröffnet, um Goldsouveräne herzustellen. Nach der Föderation begann sie 1916, australische Silbermünzen zu prägen, bis 1969 die gesamte Münzproduktion in die Royal Australian Mint in Canberra überging. Der Münzparkplatz auf der Rückseite des Geländes, unter dem sich die Überreste des alten, weitläufigen Münzfabrikkomplexes befinden, ist ein öffentlicher Parkplatz, der die Aktivitäten der Organisation Working Heritage finanziert, die das südliche Wachhaus besetzt.
Die großartige ehemalige königliche Münze ist ein historisches Wahrzeichen im Renaissance-Stil des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Umfassungsmauer des Komplexes ist eine imposante Ziegelkonstruktion mit großen schmiedeeisernen Toren und Eisenlampen. An den Eingangstoren und über dem kleinen, aber definierten Portikus des Haupteingangs an der Westfassade befindet sich ein markantes goldenes Wappen. Alles in allem spiegelt der bis heute verbleibende Komplex den wachsenden Wohlstand und das Vertrauen der Goldrausch-Ära in Melbourne wider.
